Why tracking hours pays off as a freelancer
If you work by the hour, every forgotten quarter of an hour is revenue left on the table. On a fixed price you want to know whether the project still adds up. And in the Netherlands, to claim the self-employed deduction you have to show you meet the hours criterion of 1,225 hours a year; administration and acquisition count towards it too.
A spreadsheet works as long as you remember it every day. Half5 is made for the days you don't.
How it works for a freelancer
You create your clients and projects, with a default rate and, where needed, a separate rate per client or project. Non-billable work, such as administration, goes on its own activity. Those hours count in your registration, but not on the invoice.
With the Premium plan the desktop app remembers what you were working on and suggests hours. With Basic you register yourself, on desktop, phone or web. Both include mileage tracking: your phone detects rides and you choose business, commute or private.
Invoicing from your hours
At the end of the month you create a draft invoice per client in Half5, with only the billable hours that haven't been invoiced yet. Check it, download a PDF or send it by email, optionally with a copy to your accountant. If you use accounting software, the invoice goes to Moneybird, WeFact, e-Boekhouden or Exact Online. An hour that is already on an invoice cannot be invoiced again.
The reports show how many hours you worked per client and per activity. You export the annual overview to PDF, Excel or CSV for your tax return. Half5 doesn't calculate the hours criterion for you; you see your totals.
If you grow, it grows with you
If you hire someone or work together with another freelancer, you add a user. Hour approval, leave and reports per employee are already built in. See time tracking for teams.
What a freelancer gets out of it every day.
-
No hour invoiced twice
Invoiced hours are marked. The next invoice only contains what is still open.
-
Kilometres for your tax return
Rides per vehicle, with an export for your trip log or your accountant.
-
Do it yourself, no meeting needed
You create an account, try it for 30 days and cancel yourself. Questions go by email or to the help assistant.
Frequently asked questions
Which plan suits a freelancer?
Basic is meant for the self-employed: hours, rides, leave, projects and invoices. If you want Half5 to suggest hours from your workday, you need Premium. The prices are on the pricing page.
Does Half5 track whether I meet the hours criterion?
No, there is no counter towards 1,225 hours. You also register your non-billable hours and see your totals per activity in the reports.
Can I send invoices without accounting software?
Yes. You create and send invoices in Half5 itself, as a PDF or by email. A connection with Moneybird, WeFact, e-Boekhouden or Exact Online is optional.
Can I move my hours over from another program?
Half5 has no import for hours from other apps. You can fetch your clients from your accounting software if you connect it.
